The deer won

I guess I should explain the new car.

The week between Christmas and New Year’s we went over to my parents’ side of Colorado to get together with a bunch of family.  We were staying in a dorm like cabin in a campground in a VERY rural area.  Unfortunately, during our time there Pip was on call for work.  On the nights that he was on call he had to be near an internet connection.  The cabin was nowhere near an internet connection, so he was sleeping at my parents’ house.  Well, after several nights of being jealous of all the fun I was having playing Nerts and Dutch Blitz with everyone back at the cabin (about 12/15 miles from my parents’ house) he threw caution to the wind and decided to leave the internet connection for awhile and go play.  I stayed back at my parents with the kids.  It was extremely cold while we were there and the roads were a little icy in spots because it never got above like 20 degrees the whole week.  Anyway, Pip was merrily making his way up to the cabin when a group of about 4-5 deer ran into the road and just stood in both lanes of traffic.  The choice was hit the deer or try to swerve to miss them.  Well, as I said, the road was icy and the deer were stupid.  Pip swerved and spun out into a ditch full of boulders off the side of the road.  Miraculously he was able to drive out of the ditch.  He took a quick look at the car, called me, and decided he was good to drive the rest of the way to the cabin.  When he got to the cabin, my brother in law shone his headlights on the side of our car with the damage and they determined that other than a dent on the bottom edge of the car and a couple of scratches it was good.  Pip played games and came back to my parents’ house at around 2:00 am….And then the sun came up.

The damage to the car was more extensive than previously thought, but it still ran without any issues, so we figured we’d just take it back over the mountain and have our insurance look at it when we got home.  We put off getting the car looked at until late February.  Mind you, that’s 2 months after said incident with the deer.  We drove the car as usual the entire 2 months.  The insurance guy looked at it and thought it wasn’t so bad…then he got down on the ground to look underneath.  He looked up at me and said, “What did your husband DO?!”  I told him the whole story and he just kept looking under the car and writing more stuff down on his clipboard.  After waiting for him to call the insurance headquarters and talk to them, he came back to me and said very quietly and gravely, “I’m sorry, but this is going to be a total loss.”  I was shocked.  I mean, I had been driving this car for 2 months with no issues.  Apparently, the underside of the car was so severely damaged by the boulders that they would have had to remove the bottom of the car and then completely gut the car and put it all back together before putting on a new bottom.  And that would have cost more than the value of the car.

So, in a nutshell, the deer won.  It reminds me of this commercial.  I’m sure the deer were doing something like that.  We were paid out the value of our car and got the Mazda 5 that I posted about in my last post.  Ours is a 2006.  And just in case your considering a new car, I LOVE THIS CAR.  Not too minivan, not too station wagon.  It’s perfect.  So far.  Until the deer get us again.
